For his 73rd birthday in April, Felice Macchi celebrated at La Bettola Del Gusto, a charming seafood restaurant in Pompeii, Italy. There, he indulged in the house specialty: spaghettoni, a unique thicker spaghetti, coated in a delectable fermented anchovy sauce accompanied by black truffles and butter crafted from the milk of Mediterranean water buffalo.
The dish arrived beautifully presented on a ceramic plate adorned with a whimsical hand-painted design. The artwork depicted the spaghettoni creation alongside a smoking volcano, paying homage to the nearby Mount Vesuvius.
After savoring the exquisite meal, which he described as “excellent,” Mr. Macchi decided to add the plate to his extensive collection of Buon Ricordo plates. His collection, consisting of hundreds of these Italian tableware treasures, serves both decorative and functional purposes throughout his home in Varese, Italy.
Recently appointed as the president of the Buon Ricordo Plate Collectors Association since 2022, Mr. Macchi, who works as an insurance agent, is eagerly planning an upcoming exhibition of the plates at the Fondazione Sant Elia museum in Palermo. The association, boasting around 400 members from Europe and South America, aims to showcase the beauty and history behind these collectible plates.
When asked about his passion for collecting these plates, Mr. Macchi responded with a touch of romance, emphasizing the sentimental value and unique stories each plate holds.
