AXA Turkey Supports Bengisu Avcı in Her North Channel Challenge
In a powerful union of sporting achievement and environmental advocacy, AXA Turkey is backing its Values Partner, Bengisu Avcı, as she prepares for one of her most formidable challenges yet: the North Channel swim. This ultramarathon swimmer is gearing up to tackle this daunting stage in the Ocean’s 7 series. The North Channel, stretching a grueling 35 kilometers between Scotland and Ireland, is notorious for its harsh conditions, including water temperatures as low as 12-13 degrees Celsius.
Avcı’s attempt is scheduled for July 18-23, contingent on favorable weather and sea conditions. The North Channel is renowned for its formidable challenges, featuring strong currents, tides reaching speeds of 3-4 kilometers per hour, and powerful winds. Much of this swim will occur under the cover of darkness and is anticipated to last between 10 to 12 hours.
A Call to Action on Climate Change with AXA Turkey
Through this initiative, AXA Turkey and Bengisu Avcı are not only striving for sporting glory but are also sending a resonant message about the importance of addressing climate change. Under the banner of “The Future is in Our Hands,” they aim to inspire action for the protection of both society and natural ecosystems.
Swimming for Social Good
Bengisu Avcı’s past achievements in the Ocean’s 7 series, including the English Channel, Catalina, Gibraltar, Cook Strait, and Molokai Channel, have each been dedicated to various social causes. The North Channel swim is no different, with a focus on raising awareness about the climate crisis in partnership with AXA Turkey. Following this challenge, Avcı will shift her focus to her final target in the series, the Tsugaru Channel in Japan.
A Milestone for Turkish Sports
If successful, Bengisu Avcı will be the first Turkish athlete to complete six of the seven Ocean’s 7 courses, marking a significant milestone in Turkish sports history. This achievement would edge her closer to becoming the first Turkish athlete to conquer all seven courses.
AXA Turkey, as a leader in the insurance industry, is committed to combating climate-related and environmental risks. The company views sports as a potent vehicle for promoting sustainability and is dedicated to advancing this approach through strategic partnerships.
