Canopius Group Broadens Paul Hackett’s Responsibilities

Global specialty insurer and reinsurer Canopius Group has announced an expansion of Paul Hackett’s role to encompass the duties of Regional Head of Distribution for the Asia Pacific (APAC) region, effective from March 1, 2025. Hackett, who currently leads the Marine division for both APAC and the Middle East & North Africa (MENA), will now also be a key member of the APAC Executive Committee.

In his enhanced role, Hackett will report to Soon Keen (SK) Lee, the Chief Executive Officer for APAC and MENA, along with Sam Harrison, Chief Underwriting Officer at Canopius Group. His primary focus will be on formulating and implementing the APAC distribution strategy and enhancing broker partnerships within the region.

With more than two decades of experience in the insurance industry, particularly in marine and specialty lines, Hackett brings a wealth of knowledge that is expected to bolster Canopius’ capacity to offer a wide-ranging suite of products to clients and brokers, thereby facilitating the company’s growth trajectory in APAC and MENA.

Hackett joined Canopius in 2018 and has since been pivotal in advancing the firm’s short-tail lines of business, overseeing significant expansion and successfully scaling operations.

  • He chairs the International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI) Nominating Committee and the Lloyd’s Marine Development Group in Singapore.
  • He is actively involved with the IUMI Facts and Figures Committee and the General Insurance Association of Singapore (GIA) Marine Committee.

His previous roles at RSA, Catlin, and Aspen involved senior leadership positions where he was instrumental in business development and underwriting across international markets.

Commenting on Hackett’s expanded role, SK Lee stated, “Paul has been a driving force in our regional success, and his expanded role is a testament to his leadership and deep understanding of the specialty insurance market.” Lee emphasized Hackett’s strong broker relationships and strategic growth capabilities as vital for enhancing Canopius’ presence across APAC and MENA.

Hackett expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I am excited to take on this expanded role at such a pivotal time for Canopius in APAC. Strengthening our relationships with broking partners and ensuring seamless access to our broad product offering will be key priorities as we continue to grow. I look forward to working with the team to drive our distribution strategy forward.
