Allianz Concludes Stake Sale in Bajaj Insurance Joint Ventures
Global insurance giant Allianz has reached an agreement to divest its 26% ownership in both Bajaj Allianz General Insurance Company and Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance Company. The stake is being sold to the Bajaj Group for approximately €2.6 billion, thereby concluding the long-standing partnership with Bajaj Finserv Ltd., a prominent Indian financial services entity.
The decision to exit these joint ventures was made following “constructive and amicable” negotiations with Bajaj Finserv. Despite this strategic shift, Allianz maintains its commitment to the Indian market, recognizing it as a significant area for growth. The company is keen to explore new ventures that will enhance its market presence, not just as an investor, but as an active participant in the industry.
The transaction is still pending regulatory approvals, which Allianz anticipates will take several months. As the proceeds from this sale become available, Allianz intends to evaluate various options for their deployment, aligning with its strategic goals, particularly reinvestment in potential new opportunities within India.
Allianz has pledged to adhere to its capital management policy, which was updated during the December 2024 Capital Markets Day. This policy emphasizes a balance between distributing earnings and supporting disciplined deployment of funds.
Once the €2.6 billion transaction is finalized, and the transfer of shares is completed, Allianz will cease to be a promoter of these joint ventures, leading to the termination of the agreements with Bajaj Finserv. This development marks the end of a partnership that commenced in 2001, signaling the conclusion of a long-standing collaboration.
Notably, in October 2024, Bajaj Finserv had disclosed in a stock exchange filing that Allianz was contemplating an exit from these joint ventures.
